Kate Trenerry


Kate will be sitting in on class Monday so I had her create a brief blogpost about her previous work.

I am a photographer and writer focused on exploring questions of space, power, and history in borderlands and places of division.

My current project, Walking Walls, took me to Israel/Palestine, Cyprus, and Northern Ireland to document contested sites of political partition. I shot for the project January-April 2012 and am currently editing and writing for a book as the culmination of the project.


My senior thesis in Cinema and Media Studies at Carleton College was an web-based examination of rephotography, rooted in the writings of Roland Barthes, and stretching into 21st century new media applications like Google Earth. In addition to an essay exploring this link, I created a series of rephotographs along the former Iron Curtain in Germany, superimposed on the old image through short timelapse-like videos. The rephotographs are also embedded in a Google Earth Tour that connects the sites examined.
